Earlier in the week, CNN’s Jim Acosta went rather rabid trying to get Sarah Sanders, White House Press Secretary and former Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee‘s daughter, to say outright that the press was not the enemy. Acosta lamented his failure via twitter.
“I am totally saddened by what just happened,” he wrote on Twitter. “Sarah Sanders was repeatedly given a chance to say the press is not the enemy and she wouldn’t do it. Shameful.”
President Donald Trump, echoing his own daughter Ivanka, clarified the White House’s official stance a while later.
Trump later tweeted that his daughter was correct to say the media was not the enemy of the people. Rather, he said, it is “the FAKE NEWS, which is a large percentage of the media, that is the enemy of the people!”
At a rally in Pennsylvania on Thursday night, Trump derided “the fake, fake disgusting news.”
Mike Huckabee, on the other hand, went all protective dad on Acosta.
In one tweet, Huckabee referred to his daughter as “the WINDSHIELD” and Acosta as “the BUG.”…
In another tweet, Huckabee wrote: “Jim Acosta suffers severe nose bleed from the elevation of his high horse. Taken to safe space and provided with Play Dough, a popsicle, pictures of a pony to color and a puppy.”
Them’s code words for don’t tangle with my little girl even if she can handle herself on this particular front, which, of course, Sarah Sanders most certainly can.
The reality that is being conveyed from President Trump and the ladies here is that by not giving full investigative details, leaving out clarifying information, relying on anonymous sources for scandalous headlines, and in some cases outright making stuff up before going to press, the mainstream media is not informing the American public the way the profession is charged to do. Yes, a free press is needed to keep the government sorts honest. However, more and more it looks like the media is walking lockstep in tandem to do anything but. That is why they are called “fake news,” and why those who are victims of their carelessness, negligence, and malice are calling them out on it.
Someday the talking heads might actually understand that.
