Summer seems to be the season for travel. Most Americans are on vacation that time of the year, and migrants south of the border are on the move including a caravan that is headed this way with enough people it looks like the intention may well be to overwhelm border officials with numbers and invade due to people needing to be released to wait for processing.
Yeah, the Trump Administration is on to this tactic, and they are not amused. In fact, they are planning ahead and executing a pre-emptive strike to be able to deal with the influx in a timely manner.
According to the Texas Tribune, legal professionals will begin arriving at the border this week. When the migrant caravan finally reaches the border, anyone who crosses illegally “will be referred for prosecution.” Anyone claiming asylum will have their claim processed almost instantly. If their claims are “without merit” they will be deported back to their country of origin.
“If you enter the United States illegally, let me be clear: you have broken the law. And we will enforce the law through prosecution of illegal border crossers,” the Department of Homeland Security official in charge of the operation told media in a statement. “DHS encourages persons with asylum or other similar claims to seek protections in the first safe country they enter, including Mexico.”
Ooh, hey, there’s a switch from the Obama years. Catch and release was the order of the day. Really, that should only work with fish.
At any rate, this caravan we keep hearing about seems to be an annual happening. Federal authorities are not sure just how many people are expected to be with it when it reaches the border this year, but 1,500 is the number being kicked around. At least, this time, the border patrol and courts will be more than ready for them.
