After 24 years with the Fox News Channel Shepard Smith who was one of the original Fox News reporters when the channel launched in 1996 announced at the end of his program today that he was leaving Fox News and that it was his last broadcast.
While his college Neil Cavuto who comes on after Shepard Smiths program seemed shocked by the announcement Shepard Smith had apparently asked Fox News to release him from a 5-year contract that he was only 2-years into. In a statement, he said after asking him to reconsider they obliged him and wished him well.
The following statement was released by Shepard Smith:
“Recently I asked the company to allow me to leave Fox News and begin a new chapter. After requesting that I stay, they graciously obliged,” Smith said in a statement. “The opportunities afforded this guy from small town Mississippi have been many. It’s been an honor and a privilege to report the news each day to our loyal audience in context and with perspective, without fear or favor. I’ve worked with the most talented, dedicated and focused professionals I know and I’m proud to have anchored their work each day — I will deeply miss them.”
While his colleagues have expressed on air that they are sad to see him go, I doubt that is the sentiment of most Fox News viewers. Shepard Smith is known and hated by most for his liberal commentary he frequently injects into the news hour and his anti-Trump comments have not won him and favor with most viewers either… In fact, there has been more than one occasion, including one recently, that he and Sean Hannity took subtle shots at one another.
I don’t know about the rest of you, but I am happy to see him go and hope he is replaced with someone who will actually report the news and leave the commentary to those on the evening show lineup…
Let me know how you feel about his departure in the comment section below.
