Rep. Elijah Cummings is having a hard time running fast enough from the living conditions in his district. All week, President Donald Trump and his team have been talking about the rat infestation that plagues it. On Wednesday, the president even released a twenty-year-old video with Cummings talking about social ills in his district then. Also on Wednesday, Secretary Ben Carson of Housing and Urban Development invited the congress critter to take a tour of the department’s facility in his district.
The representative declined.
Carson extended an invitation to Cummings on Tuesday to tour a HUD-run housing project in his home congressional district and assess the city’s longstanding and escalating rodent infestation. Cummings subsequently passed on the opportunity.
“Secretary Carson’s office invited Congressman Cummings yesterday evening,” a source familiar with the situation confirmed to the Daily Wire. “The Congressman was unable to join due to scheduling conflicts.”
You’d think that a representative truly interested in the welfare of his constituents would make an effort to work with the people who could facilitate change in his district, but Cummings just can’t alter his schedule and take the time. He did, though, tell the president that he cared via Twitter exchange.
“Mr. President, I go home to my district daily. Each morning, I wake up, and I go fight for my neighbors,” Cummings replied. “It is my constitutional duty to conduct oversight of the Executive Branch. But, it is my moral duty to fight for my constituents.”
Fighting for constituents seems to include flying off to Italy with a Congressional delegation, as that is where Cummings was over the weekend.
In the meantime, the people of Cummings’s district are still living in rat-infested squaller and housing that is falling apart. How all of that is going to get cleaned up with the billions of dollars going to that district disappearing is anyone’s guess.
