No good deed goes unpunished. That is one way to look at the attempt to mobilize the people triggered by the news that Bernie Marcus, founder of Home Depot, donating a lot of money to get President Donald Trump re-elected. The push online has taken on a hashtag, #BoycottHomeDepot, and the support of those determined that Trump not get another four years in the White House.
In fact, the twitter campaign is encouraging those on the left who actually frequent do it yourself home improvement establishments to shop at Home Depot’s competitor, Lowe’s.
That is all well and good, but dig a little deeper on #BoycottHomeDepot and their contention that spending money at the box store just funnels money into the re-elect Trump campaign falls apart.
But, as conservatives have pointed out, there are a few logical inconsistencies in the boycott movement. First, Marcus retired in 2002, so shopping at Home Depot does not “send donations DIRECTLY to trump’s 2020 campaign.” And as Twitchy notes, Marcus’ former partner, Arthur Blank, is a major donor to Democratic presidential candidates, which complicates leftist critics’ shopping calculations.
As for the plan to direct money to Lowe’s, that’s also problematic, as Lowe’s spends a vast majority of its political donations on pro-business Republicans, as documented by Open Secrets.
It looks like the knee jerk snowflakes forgot to do their due diligence.
As for Marcus’s fortune, upon his leaving the earth in bodily form, the man has pledged to give away the majority of his fortune to charity. That, of course, is the express wish of leftists and socialists everywhere. It is very nice of him, actually, to want to fund groups that further the causes he supports. But, that is not good enough for the never Trump crowd. No, supporting Donald Trump in the presidency is unforgivable in their eyes.
And the company with all those hourly wage earners that Marcus built, and no longer controls, will suffer.
